When a Child is Born (Soleado) is a song of 1976 by Johnny Mathis written by Fred Jay. The original melody was Soleado, a melody of 1974 by Ciro Dammico, alias Zacar, composer of the Italian group Daniel Santecruz Ensemble.

In 1974, the melody was sung with a Spanish lyrics by Manolo Otero, "Todo el tiempo del mundo" (I've All the Time for Waiting), and with a German lyrics by Michael Holm,"Tränen lügen nicht" (Tears Don't Lie). The Michael Holm version, performed in English, was a minor hit in the US, reaching #53 on Billboard's Hot 100, #7 on Billboard's Easy Listening Top 50. In 1975 it was sung with a French lyrics, written by Henri Dijan, by Mireille Mathieu "On ne vit pas sans se dire adieu" (We Do not Live Without Saying Goodbye to Each Other") and with a Hungarian lyrics by Zsuzsa Cserháti "Édes kisfiam" (My dear Son), who wrote the lyrics after her son was born.

The English lyrics has been performed by artists as diverse as Boney M., Kenny Rogers, Bing Crosby, The Moody Blues, Cissy Houston, Andrea Bocelli, Charles Aznavour, Plácido Domingo, Sissel Kyrkjebø, Willie Nelson, Tarja Turunen, Demis Roussos, Il Divo, Connie Talbot ( 2008 and 2009) and others.

The most successful version is probably the Jack Gold produced version for Johnny Mathis which was his sole number one single in the UK, spending three weeks at the top of the chart in December 1976 and selling 850,000 copies.

Although the song is often sung as a Christmas standard, it does not actually make any specific mention of Christmas in its lyrics. However, some feel that the importance attached to looking forward to the birth of one particular child somewhere, anywhere, in the world lends itself to an association with the birth of Jesus Christ, and the reference in the lyrics to "a tiny star" which "lights up way up high" could seem to be an allusion to the Star of Bethlehem.

The hummed beginning of the song was used as the basis for a dance record by the German producer Mark'Oh, entitled "Tears Don't Lie", a hit throughout much of Europe in 1995. As it was unconnected to Christmas and not released at that time of year, anyone who knows the melody principally from this track may not necessarily associate it with Christmas.

Filipino singer José Mari Chan also did an English rendition of the song on his holiday album, Christmas in our Hearts. Sarah Brightman recorded a version for her 2008 holiday CD "A Winter Symphony". Australian singer Alfio recorded a version of this song in 2006 for his debut album Tranquillita: The Christmas Edition.
