Author: Professor Suping Lu

Bodies Piled Five Feet High.

It was like killing sheep. How many troops were trapped and killed is difficult to estimate, but it may be anywhere between 5,000 and 20,000.

With the overland routes cut off, the Chinese swarmed to the river through the Hsiakwan gate, which became quickly choked. Emerging via this gate today I found it necessary to drive my car over heaps of bodies 5 feet high, over which hundreds of Japanese trucks and guns had already passed.

Streets throughout the city were littered with the bodies of civilians and abandoned Chinese equipment and uniforms.

The helpless Chinese troops, disarmed for the most part and ready to surrender, were systematically rounded up and executed. I did this for much the same reasons that I read the memoirs and poems which came out of the trenches of World War I, as a matter of moral and social duty: attention ought be paid to extreme human suffering and we must do what we can to make some human sense out of it.

In 1933 Gypsies were defined as natural-born criminals, and therefore subject to laws against 'social deviants', while some were being involuntarily sterilized under the Law for the Prevention of Hereditarily Diseased Offspring. By 1934 they were being corralled in closed camping areas. By 1936 there were Gypsies in Dachau, Germany's first concentration camp for political and social enemies of the state. In that same year, in preparation for the Olympic Games, more than six hundred Gypsies were herded into a closed encampment beside a sewage dump, with a consequent massive loss of life through disease. Some of the survivors were assigned to forced labour until 1943, when they were sent to Auschwitz, but from the first months of the war Gypsies were deported out of Germany to the east under much the same conditions as would later govern the deportation of Jews. After Germany's invasion of the Soviet Union there were mass shootings of Eastern Europe's Gypsies as well as its Jews.

Publisher: OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS

GOVERNMENT APPEAL TO THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS

The Chinese government first condemned the massacre on the international on February 2, 1938, at the sixth meeting at the 100th Session of the Council of the League of Nations in Geneva. On that date, Mr Wellington Koo, first delegate of the Republic of China, reported to the other 15 members of the council about the atrocities that occurred in China since the Eighteenth Assembly in September 1937, when Mr Koo had made an earlier appeal against Japanese aggression. To Mr Koo and other government leaders, the SACK of Nanjing was one of many atrocities PERPETRATED by the Japanese military. At this meeting, as at the previous one, he first highlighted the INDISCRIMINATE bombardment of open towns, which had resulted in the mass killings of Chinese civilians. He stressed that 17 provinces had been bombed and that the victims were MOSTLY women and children.

Author: Our MOST compassionate Modern Chinese History female teacher, Ms IRIS CHANG
Publisher: PENGUIN

In calling it a "forgotten Holocaust," Ms. Chang draws connections between the slaughter in Europe and in Asia of millions of innocents during World War II. To be sure, Japan and Nazi Germany would only later become allies, and not very good allies at that. But the events at Nanking -- to which Hiltler surely took no exception -- would later make them moral co-conspirators, as violent aggressors, perpetrators of what would ultimately be called "crimes against humanity."

But Mr Durdin vision soon changed:

Two days of Japanese occupation changed the whole outlook. Wholesale looting, the violation of women, the murder of civilians, the eviction of Chinese from their homes, mass executions of war prisoners and the impressing of able-bodied men turned Nanking into a city of terror.

Many Civilians Slain
The killing of civilians was widespread. Foreigners who traveled widely through the city Wednesday found civilian dead on every street. Some of the victims were aged men, women and children.

Policemen and firemen were special objects of attack. Many victims were bayoneted and some of the wounds were barbarously cruel.

Any person who ran because of fear or excitement was likely to be killed on the spot as was any one caught by roving patrols in streets or alleys after dusk. Many slayings were witnessed by foreigners. ...

Nanking's streets were littered with dead. Sometimes bodies had to be moved before automobiles could pass.

【轉載】At two a.m., a Nazis' truck roared into the ghetto, bringing dozens of armed Latvians. Mr Mordechai Anielewicz notified all fighting units to hold their fire. Four hours later, hundreds of German soldiers, singing marching songs, advanced confidently into Nalewki Street. Behind them came light tanks, cannons, flamethrowers, and three vehicles with submachine guns.
A ZOB (the Jewish Fighting Organization) resister hurled the first grenade. Then another grenade was thrown, and another. For two hours, a steady flow of grenades, Molotov cocktails, and bullets rained down on the Germans, who hadn't expected an armed assault. When the SS officer in charge finally ordered his stunned troops to retreat, the street was strewn with German dead and wounded. Not one Jewish fighter had been injured. In the pause that followed, ZOB resisters rushed down to the streets to commandeer the helmets, weapons, and uniforms of their enemy's dead.

At the same time as this attack, grenades and Molotov cocktails greeted the German and Ukrainian units marching into Zamenhof Street. Hit from all sides, the startled soldiers scattered and fled toward buildings, seeking shelter, but all doorways were blocked. After a half hour, the foot soldiers withdrew and two light tanks rolled into the street. ZOB grenades blew up both tanks and their crews inside.

The mass executions of war prisoners added to the horrors the Japanese brought to Nanking. After killing the Chinese soldiers who threw down their arms and surrendered, the Japanese combed the city for men in civilian garb who were suspected of being former soldiers.

In one building in the refugee zone 400 men were seized. They were marched off, tied in batches of fifty, between lines of riflemen and machine gunners, to the execution ground ...

Thousands of prisoners were executed by the Japanese. Most of the Chinese soldiers who had been interned in the safety zone were shot en masse. The city was combed in a systemic house-to-house search for men having knapsack marks on their shoulders or other signs of having been soldiers. They were herded together and executed ...

Many were killed where they were found, including men innocent of any army connection and many wounded soldiers and civilians. I witnessed three mass executions of prisoners within a few hours Wednesday. In one slaughter a tank gun was turned on a group of more than 100 soldiers at a bomb shelter near the Ministry of Communications.
A favorite method of execution was to herd groups of a dozen men at entrances of dugouts and to shoot them so the bodies toppled inside. Dirt then was shoveled in and the men buried.

【轉載】The present book represents an initial effort to examine anti-Semitism systematically and empirically across space and time. This book does not focus directly on the Holocaust; rather, it seeks to explore the roots of Jewish hatred that, in many ways, prepared the ground for the Holocaust. Among the many questions to be confronted are: how and why had antipathy toward European Jews reached such heights on the eve of the Holocaust; how did the levels of anti-Semitism on the eve of the Holocaust compare to those of earlier decades; did anti-Semitism vary in content and in intensity across societies; how does anti-Semitism differ from other forms of religious, racial, and ethnic prejudice; and, how likely is it that worldwide anti-Semitism could once again reach epidemic levels?
