轉載Reign of Terror

I have been supplied confidentially with two separate and completely reliable reports from American missionaries at Nanking and missionaries' doctor at Wu-hu who remained at their posts when the Japanese entered these cities regarding atrocities committed by the Japanese army (copies by bag). Reports quote approximately 100 authenticated cases of RAPE in American university buildings in Nanking in the first few days of occupation.

轉載During the two months after their entry into the Nationalist capital on Dec. 13, 1937, Japanese troops perpetrated a massacre that has virtually NO parallel in recent history. Expert witnesses at the International Military Tribunal of the Far East ... estimated that some 260,000 noncombatants were slaughtered cold blood. Many experts NOW believe the number to be over 350,000 .... The carnage was the result of a secret order sent to Japanese forces in China under the seal of Prince Asaka, uncle of Emperor Hirohito [Empress Nagako]: “Kill all captives.” Soon competitions arose among Japanese soldiers to see who could kill most efficiently.

Mr Simon Wiesenthal made these concise and telling remarks about escape assistance:

the MOST important escape route, the so-called 'MONASTERY route' between Austria and Italy, came into being. Roman CATHOLIC priests, especially FRANCISCANS, helped CHANNEL NAZI fugitives from one monastery to the next, until the fugitives were received by the CARITAS organization in Rome. Best known was a monastery in Rome, a monastery UNDER the control of Franciscans, which became a VERITABLE transit camp for NAZI criminals. The man who organized this hideout was NO less than a bishop and came from Graz: BISHOP Alois Hudal.

【轉載】BISHOP Hudal's picture of the world was defined by German nationalism, anticommunism and ANTI-SEMITISM. He was a CONVINCED Anti-Semite. 'He HATED the Jews', said one former confidant.

BISHOP Hudal REPEATEDLY made use of the Anti-Semitism resentment which was then current, by, for example, attacking the so-called 'predominance' of Jews in academic posts. He had no objection to laws that protected 'one's own property' in an emergency 'against a deluge of foreign element'; therefore BISHOP Hudal approved of the 'Nuremberg RACIAL Laws.'

While it would be easy to judge BISHOP Hudal as singularly biased, one MUST remember that BISHOP Hudal's religious Anti-Judaism was shared by LARGE sections of the clergy at the time.

The collapse of the 'Third Reich' did NOT fundamentally alter BISHOP Hudal's attitude. BUT initially He knew how to adapt WITHOUT undergoing any internal transformation or distancing himself from the Nazi system.

After receiving new eyewitness atrocity accounts, The North-China Daily News published an editorial under the title "A Great Change" on 21 January 1938. The editorial indicates that, on 25 December 1937, when the newspaper referred to the scenes of horror perpetrated in Nanjing by the Japanese forces, it hoped that order would be restored shortly and that the sufferings of the civilian population would soon be brought to an end.

To the astonishment of most people it is now learned that these outrages have been continued, and that ever since the occupation of Nanking until within the last few days, ABDUCTION of women, RAPE and looting have been carried on with an industry which would have done justice to a more praise-worthy cause. Chinese have been stabbed with bayonets, or reckless shot. It is estimated that more than 10,000 people have been killed, some not even guilty of the trivial offence of having the hardihood to fight for their country. How many women have been RAPED it is impossible to ascertain but the estimates vary from as low as 8,000 to as high as 20,000. Girls of as tender an age as eleven years, women as old as fifty-three have been the forced victims of military lust. Refugees have been robbed of their scanty supply of money, their clothing, bedding and food, and all this was still going on as late as less than a week ago. In the initial stages insufficiency of military police rendered control of the disorderly soldiery impossible. More of such police have been appointed, but as late as a week ago, Japanese soldiers were still breaking into houses day and night, indulging in RAPE and ABDUCTION.

Went to gate at 7:30 to get message to Mr. Sone who slept down in house with F. Chen. Red Cross kitchen must have coal and rice. A stream of weary wild-eyed women were coming in. Said their night had been one of horror; that again and again their homes had been visited by Japanese soldiers. (Twelve-year-old girls up to sixty-year-old women RAPED. Husbands forced to leave bedroom and pregnant wife at point of bayonet. If only the thoughtful people of Japan knew facts of these days of horror.) Wish some one were here who had time to write the sad story of each person — especially that of the younger girls who had blackened their faces and cut their hair. The gateman said they had been coming in since daylight at 6:30.

大日本皇軍在南京城創造的人間地獄:

【轉載】
The accusations expressed in the booklet titled: “Historical Sources Materials on the Nanjing Massacre Committed by the Japanese Army of Invasion” are indeed sweeping, as the following passage illustrates:
After entering the city, the Japanese military killed every person they saw, RAPED and killed every woman they encountered, looted valuables wherever they found them, and burned houses indiscriminately. The Japanese military employed various methods of killing: beheading; the smashing of skulls; disembowelment; and live burial. Hands and legs were mutilated; sexual organs were cut off, and sticks were rammed into vaginas and anuses. People were drowned, machine-gunned, and burned alive. The ferocious atrocity of these acts is unique in human history.

保護自家婦女, 卻慘遭大日本皇軍刀砍

【轉載】
Since the arrival of Japanese troops on the 10th there has been established a ruthless reign of terror which has far exceeded anything ever achieved by any Chinese soldiers in my experience. From the hospital windows we have seen Japanese soldiers stop unarmed civilians on the road, search them, and find nothing calmly shoot them through the head. We have seen Japanese soldiers firing at fleeing civilians as a hunter would at rabbits. We have had case after case brought into the hospital slashed with sabers or stabbed with bayonets because they had nothing more to give the robbers (i.e. Japanese soldiers), having already been robbed many times, or because they did not produce some of their women folks on demand. This morning such a pathetic case was brought to us with his head half severed from the neck at the back, his throat cut through the trachea at the front, and his left cheek slashed through to the mouth, ALL BECAUSE he did NOT produce any women on their (Japanese soldiers') demand.

轉載】As soon as Nanking fell, on December 13, 1937, the Japanese soldiers went on a rampage of killing, RAPING, burning, and looting. Among the most heinous crimes they commited, the Japanese soldiers RAPED and GANG-RAPED Chinese women and torture some victims to death. According to the estimates of Chairman Mr. John Rabe and Rev. Mr. James M. McCallum of the International Committee for the Nanking Safety Zone, between December 16 and December 19, at least one thousand women and girls were RAPED each night. Mr. McCallum wrote in his diary on December 19: "Never have I heard or read of SUCH brutality. RAPE ! RAPE ! RAPE ! ... People are hysterical."

轉載】Mr George Fitch, associate general secretary of the Foreign YMCA of Nanjing, circulated a 9,500-word letter to his friends in Shanghai and abroad that detailed his observations in Nanjing between December 10 and December 31, 1937. The letter began:

What I am about to relate is anything but a pleasant story; in fact, it is so very unpleasant that I cannot recommend anyone without a strong stomach to read it. For it is a story of such crime and horror as to be almost unbelievable, the story of the depredations of a horde of degraded criminals of incredible bestiality, who have been, and now are, working their will, unrestrained, on a peaceful, kindly, law-abiding Chinese people. Yet it is a story which I feel must be told, even if it is seen by only a few. I cannot rest until I have told it, and perhaps fortunately, I am one of a very few who are in a position to tell it. It is not complete -- only a small part of the whole; and God alone knows when it will be finished. I pray it may be soon -- but I am afraid it is going to go on for many months to come, not just here but in other parts of China. I believe it has no parallel in modern history.

轉載】The Reverend Boynton of National Christian Council who brought me these reports stated that the Japanese Embassy officials who reached Nanking shortly after entry of Japanese troops were horrifed when they saw orgy of drunkenness, murder, RAPE and robbery which was going on openly in and around refugee zone. Failing to make any impression on military commanders whose attitude of callous indifference makes it probable that army was deliberately turned loose on the city as a punitive measure and despair of getting representations through to Tokyo past the military control, Embassy officials had even suggested to missionaries that the latter should try and get publicity for the facts in Japan so that Japanese Government would be forced by public opinion to curb the army.

轉載】New arrivals on the Birkenau ramp underwent the process of selection. Amid the chaos of disembarkation. Auschwitz prisoner-workers and SS guards separated the deportees by gender and ordered them to form short ranks. SS medical staff then performed selections of Jewish prisoners, determining from among the mass of humanity who would be retained for work and who would perish immediately in the gas chambers. Young and able-bodied Jews were often chosen for labor and registered as prisoners at the camp. The sick, the weak, and the aged were murdered upon arrival. Young children generally shared the fate of the elderly and unfit in going directly to the gas chamber, often dooming their mothers or other adults who accompanied them.
